Chair Upholstery

Chair upholstery as we know it emerged during the renaissance, some 500 years ago. Today, we take the upholstered seat for granted and you would be hard-pressed to find a home that did not have many examples of richly upholstered furniture in the living room, bedroom, study and elsewhere. At Jerome Shorter, we are dedicated to the fine art of upholstery and strive to move the craft forward with every piece we create for our clients.

Resist the Urge to DIY Upholstery

The proliferation of do-it-yourself videos on the internet makes it seem like anyone who is reasonably handy and able to follow directions should be able to create world-class upholstery. Not so. While we applaud the impulse to take matters into your own hands, the fact is there are some things that are better left to professionals, and chair upholstery is one of them.

Why is that? Because a quality upholstery job, one that will create that much-sought-after combination of visual satisfaction, comfort and long-term durability, requires the upholsterer to take a multitude of factors into consideration. Everything from the quality of the joinery to the springs, the webbing, the muslin, the type of foam and the type of fabric influence the look, feel and durability of the final product. If one is lacking in the necessary knowledge in any of those areas the finished chair will typically start to exhibit problems soon after the job is complete.

Popular natural upholstery fabrics

Leather: One of the first materials used as upholstery fabric leather remains a popular choice due to its timeless qualities and durability. However, if you want it to remain beautiful and supple you will need to perform regular maintenance.

Silk: Silk can produce some astonishingly beautiful finishes, but it is not a fabric you want to use on chairs that get a lot of daily use.

Wool: Wool provides good resistance to fading, wrinkling and pilling and when blended with certain synthetic fibres is also relatively soil resistant and easy to clean.

Cotton: The amount of wearability you get from cotton will depend in large part on the weave. For a formal look choose a Damask weave. For a more casual finish choose canvas duck.Linen: Linen can provide a beautiful, timeless look that’s easily adapted to just about any decor. However, it wrinkles and soils easily and it’s not for high-traffic furniture.

Popular synthetic upholstery fabrics

Vinyl: Vinyl is often selected as a leather alternative because of its affordability and because it’s usually easier to care for.

Acetate: Acetate is typically sold as a kind of imitation silk. Its big advantage over silk is its price. Not a good choice for heavy-wear furniture.

Acrylic: As acetate was developed as a synthetic silk, acrylic was developed as an imitation wool, and it does the job admirably. Wearability will depend on the quality of the acrylic.

Nylon: Nylon is most often blended with other fabrics. The result is one of the most durable upholstery fabrics available.

Microfiber: Microfiber is derived from polyester. It has a velvet-like feel but is normally much more durable than velvet. It also resists stains and fading, which makes it good for high-use chair upholstery.Olefin: Olefin is another good choice for heavy-wear chairs. It resists stains and abrasion and it doesn’t bleach out easily in sunlight. You’ll often find olefin on outdoor furniture.

Jerome’s service is excellent. My company needed 3 items reupholstered and Jerome provided a quote with plenty of relevant fabric choices.
He collected each item individually and quickly returned each, keeping us up to date on the process.
Jerome’s customer service and punctual turn around of the items was great.
Well recommended.

John, Tunbridge Wells

We had four porter-style antique armchairs, a sofa and a chaise-longue extensively repaired and re-upholstered by Jerome. His work was meticulously professional, completed to a very high standard and delivered on time and to budget. His artistic judgement is thoughtful, helpful but never intrusive. This was a complicated and expensive job which he excelled in. We are already repeat customers.

Mr Paine, Horsmonden

Jerome’s work is amazing and he is a pleasure to do business with. I and my chair thank him!
