Creating upholstery for a boat is not the same as creating upholstery for living room chairs. Because of the environment they operate in, boats can be uniquely hard on upholstery. The salty air, temperature extremes, acid rain, UV damage and more all take a toll on boat upholstery. So your upholsterer must understand the challenge and their reupholstery work must be up to the task.

 

The good news is that boat owners no longer need to settle for either vinyl or vinyl when it comes to their seat coverings. Today a plethora of materials are available that will stand up to the marine environment while providing previously unimagined levels of comfort and visual panache. 

 

Yesterday’s stiff and disagreeable seat coverings are yielding to silk-like materials, soft but durable chenilles and a variety of new canvas weaves that are both UV resistant, outdoor compatible, and far more agreeable to sit on than anything that’s come before. Can the Existing Framework be Saved?

Often times it takes more to reupholster boat seats than simply replacing the fabric and tidying things up a bit. On older boats in particular the framework supporting the upholstery may be rotted away and basically useless, a result of the unforgiving nature of the maritime environment.

 

In cases where the framework can be re-used, we definitely do so. But in some instances, there is no choice but to replace the framework. The exact material we use to create a new, durable framework to support the upholstery will depend on several things:

  • The type of boat
  • The age of the boat
  • The original materials
  • The customer’s preferences
  • The customer’s budget

In addition, the type of boat seat being reupholstered will factor into what type of framing materials are used. For example: framing a chair for the main seating area will call for different materials than framing a captain’s chair. In the case of the latter teak or mahogany are typically used. While in the case of a sofa in the main seating area plywood coated with resin may be all that’s necessary.
