Collaboration, quality and comfort are the driving factors that make Jerome Shorter Furniture an exceptional choice for bespoke upholstery.
We are a creative, design-aware, team that can recognise your needs and vision to guide you in producing an authentic and unique piece that reflects you, your lifestyle or your brand.
Our classically trained Master Craftsmen ensure quality at every stage of the construction. Our furniture is always carefully inspected and must pass a number of rigorous quality control tests prior to leaving the studio.
The diversity of our clientele and the range of projects we work on shows we know what we are doing. Whether it is a project for a large luxury brand or direct-to-consumer, our service provides peace of mind that we are passionate about fulfilling your needs at the highest standard.
How we create perfect furniture that is perfect for you.
Step One – Your Initial Enquiry
It all starts with us understanding your specific requirements including end-use and basic aesthetics. It is important that we have an idea of what you are looking for so we can form an initial proposal. Whether you are looking for a custom-built sofa, armchair, chaise, headboard, set of dining chairs or a unique installation we are always keen to help.
Step Two – Site Visit
We can arrange a visit with you to advise on what might and might not work in the intended room or space. From this we can, together, get a better understanding of the project and can discuss in person the style of piece(s) and how it/they will look in relation to their surroundings.
Step Three – Create Your Piece
There are many variables when it comes to upholstery. The density of a cushion, the depth of a seat, the height, the style, the amount of wear a sofa or chair will receive and so on. To begin with, the aesthetics of a piece of furniture must look right for you. With your criteria in mind, Jerome Shorter Furniture will develop a set of drawings based on our discussions. These, will be presented to you with a selection of fabric choices and finishes. Simply choose the option that best suits you and your lifestyle and we will have the pleasure in doing the rest for you.
Step Four – Finished Product
Once you are happy with the proposed design and after receiving the fabric, the project will be carried out within a four to six week period, and then delivered directly to you. We can also provide a installation service.
From Concept to Comfort
From preliminary sketches and drawings to building furniture from the frame up, the creative process takes place at our studio workshop in Kent. As well as all the facilities to develop furniture design ideas, Jerome Shorter Furniture has access to an enviable range of fabrics and leathers. We employ traditional and modern upholstery methods and only the highest quality materials go into the furniture we produce.
A high-quality piece of upholstered furniture is made with a kiln-dried hard-wood frame, which will last for many years when well-constructed. A sprung seat platform or back should ideally use twin-coil springs which are hand-tied to each other and to the frame using a quality mattress twine. Upholsterers would traditionally use fillings such as horse/hog hair and stitch these into a hessian lining. The fillings are hand-stitched to create a firm, rolled edge on the front of a chair or a scroll arm for example. Finally, the upholsterer would insert a second filling or layer of hair and wadding prior to calico and the final cover.
The principles of traditional upholstery have stood the test of time and the craft is still very much alive today, but of course new materials and methods have been created and designed to replace some of the traditional and painstaking upholstery techniques. We use both traditional fillings and natural materials such as coir fibre (coconut hair) which can be a more cost-effective alternative to horse hair. Latex and wool are also employed as more environmentally friendly options.
With a desire to embrace the technology now available to us in the industry, we are always open to new ideas, concepts and means of production that will set us apart. 3D modelling using a 3D printer is one such concept that has arisen from our clients’ desires to see a design before production.
